Mediterranean Sea

The Mediterranean Sea covers approximately 2.5 million km2 (the equivalent of 25% of USA´s total area). It was an important route for merchants and travellers of ancient times, allowing for trade and cultural exchange between emergent peoples of the region. The Roman, Greek, and Ottoman Empire were developed around the Mediterranean, which unites the three continents of Africa, Asia and Europe. Recent initiatives from the European Union are trying to foster a Mediterranean Community.
