Levant

This term traditionally describes the East Mediterranean at large, a historic, originally-grown cultural region, defined by its surrounding topology (sea, desert, mountains) rather than by borders. The origin of the Latin word “levare” – denoting the rise of the sun – refers to a European viewpoint toward the east. An imprecise term, Levant is an area of cultural habitation, not a clearly defined geographic region.
